German DJ, producer, and record label owner, recognised as one of the most influential proponents of contemporary techno. Born in Pößneck, Thuringia (former East Germany) in 1977, he discovered techno in the early 1990s and became a resident DJ at OstGut (later Berghain) in 1999. Widely associated with Berlin, Berghain, and Hard Wax, where he worked from 2002 to 2012. His productions sit between contemporary and pre-techno, characterised by a unique aesthetic at once reduced and rough, emotional and unpredictable. He runs the label MDR (Marcel Dettmann Records) and releases on Ostgut Ton.
