The War and Treaty is an American husband-and-wife duo from Albion, Michigan, consisting of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter (née Blount). The pair met at Marylands Spirit of Love festival in August 2010 and married in 2014, forming the duo as Trotter & Blount before adopting the name The War and Treaty in 2016. Their sound fuses southern soul, gospel, country, Americana, blues, and rock and roll into what critics call country soul. Michael, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq, discovered his songwriting voice while stationed overseas; Tanya first gained recognition as a child actress and singer in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit alongside Lauryn Hill. Their studio albums include Healing Tide (2018), Hearts Town (2020), Lovers Game (2023), and Plus One (2024). In 2023 they became the first Black duo nominated for the CMA Duo of the Year and ACM Duo of the Year awards, and they have earned Grammy nominations and widespread acclaim for their emotionally charged live performances.
