The Format
Peoria, US
indie pop · indie rock · alternative · power pop
The Format is an American indie rock duo from Peoria, Arizona, formed in 2002 by vocalist Nate Ruess and multi-instrumentalist Sam Means. Childhood friends, the pair blended indie, alternative, folk, and 1960s/70s pop influences, naming the band as a jab at the music industry's cookie-cutter approach to hit singles. They released two acclaimed albums, Interventions + Lullabies (2003) and Dog Problems (2006), before going on hiatus in 2008. Ruess went on to front fun. (of "We Are Young" fame), while Means pursued solo and production work. The duo reunited in 2025 and released their long-awaited third album, Boycott Heaven, on January 23, 2026.
