about
Nyabinghi Drum Circle is a communal Rastafari drumming tradition rooted in the spiritual practices of the Rastafari movement. Featuring three core drums — the Thunder (bass), the Funde (heartbeat rhythm), and the Repeater (improvised syncopation) — Nyabinghi drumming is performed in group circles during sacred gatherings, reasoning sessions, and festival celebrations. Originating in Jamaica through the fusion of West African drumming traditions and Afro-Jamaican styles like Burru and Kumina, Nyabinghi rhythms were codified by the legendary Count Ossie in the 1950s. The tradition is widely regarded as the direct ancestor of ska, rocksteady, and reggae, and continues to be a living spiritual practice at festivals and cultural events worldwide.
