Founded in 1842 by conductor Ureli Corelli Hill, the New York Philharmonic is the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States and one of the oldest in the world. Based at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center, the orchestra is one of the celebrated Big Five American orchestras. Throughout its history it has premiered landmark works by Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, and Stravinsky, and has been led by music directors including Gustav Mahler, Arturo Toscanini, Leonard Bernstein, and Jaap van Zweden. Gustavo Dudamel becomes the next music and artistic director beginning with the 2026-27 season.
