American jazz singer and pianist (1924-2009) known for her distinctive light, girlish voice and impeccable piano work. Born in East Durham, New York, she began playing piano at age five and moved to Manhattan after high school to pursue music. She sang with the Woody Herman Orchestra and Alvino Rey's band before moving to Paris in 1952, where she formed the vocal group the Blue Stars. She founded her own label, Daffodil Records, in 1974 and remained an influential figure in vocal jazz throughout her career.
